  • Use Question-It to more effectively think your way through constant workplace change. Boost personal performance, your job and your career by becoming an inquisitive change-adept worker.

How Question-It Works

Improving personal and team thinking effectiveness and productivity is actually fairly easy. Question-It was developed based on the following two common traits of Exceptional Thinkers:

1. Exceptional Thinkers ask the right questions.

2. Exceptional Thinkers use the correct thinking process.

1. Asking the right questions gives your mind the best chance to find the right actions to take. When we ask the right questions, we succeed as effective thinkers. When we don’t ask questions, we greatly diminish our thinking capabilities.

Since people can rarely bring to mind all the right questions to ask (at the exact moment of thinking), Question-It offers over 550 universal questions that can be applied to any problem, issue or challenge. Questions are organized into three categories

  • Prime Questions: Key questions that facilitate critical thinking.
  • Fundamental Questions: Standard questions that facilitate basic thinking.
  • Nutcracker Questions: Powerful questions that facilitate deep thinking.

Here’s how to use the app to improve meeting productivity by finding and asking the right questions.

Steps

Description

1

Click Tasks on the home menu.

2

Question-It will list 21 of the most common meeting thinking tasks. Find the task you are discussing.

3

Click on the task to open the Sub-Task page.

4

Choose from 3 types of questions:

  1. Prime Questions
  2. Fundamental Questions
  3. Nutcracker Questions

Note: Be smart about the questions you ask. Asking too many questions has its own problems.

5

Also consider using Recommended Thinklets.

Thinklets are traditional thinking techniques, templates and worksheet but with embedded expert facilitation questions.

Process 2. Que Asking questions within the correct Thinking Process.

In addition to asking the right questions, Exceptional thinkers understand that thinking will be haphazard in the absence of an effective thinking process.

Since people can rarely bring to mind all the right questions to ask (at the exact moment of thinking), questions are embedded into 21 of the most common thinking tasks. These tasks comprise Question-It’s Thinking Process that guides you to find the right questions to ask from these three categories:

Thinking Processes are the mental structures or frameworks in which thought occurs.   Thinking processes are essentially a sequencing of thinking tasks. Skipping or missing a thinking task can lead to ineffective thinking. Here is a process example.

  • Choosing the right thinking process (framework) affects the questions you ask.
  • Questions you ask affects the information you gather.
  • Information gathered affects your analysis of the situation.
  • Analysis of the situation affects your conclusions.
  • Conclusions affect your development of ideas and solutions
  • And Ideas and solutions affect the actions you take.

Here’s how to use it to improve meeting productivity by using a correct thinking process.

Steps

Description

1

Click the “Locator” button in the menu bar: You will see something like this:

2

The red is where you are currently in your meeting.

3

Look at the thinking tasks that follow to determine what might be the next best task to take.

Note: Just use the tasks the best serve your meeting outcomes.

4

If your meeting seems to be stalled, look at prior meeting tasks to see if something important might have been missed.

Remember: You are only as good as the questions you ask!

The evolution of “tools” has been one way of marking humankind’s progress.  Automated Consultant apps represent an evolution from manual to cognitive tools. These apps are designed to improve knowledge worker “thinking” productivity in much the same way that invention of the assembly line and automation tools improved manual worker “labor” productivity.

Automated Consultant apps are built on the premise that the choice of using cognitive tools (thinklets) follows the same principle that underlies the selection and use of any manual tool: choose one appropriate for the thinking task at hand.

Astool 4. Co-brand Thinklets – Thinking Emulation Grid (top)

At the heart of facilitated thinking technology and Automated Consultant apps is the following Thinking Emulation Grid™.  This grid organizes thinking components into a smoothly coordinated and integrated system that works by guiding thinkers along specific Thinking Processes and Thinking Tasks to reach Thinking Points. It is at these thinking points where thinklets are applied as if a human consultant or expert were working directly with an individual or team. Help us grow these tools.

Thinking Emulation Grid™.

AssumSmartphone application development strategy:  (top)

Facilitated Thinking Technology can be characterized like having an Assembly line for your mind. It is a Solvinnoprocess that improves knowledge-worker thinking productivity in much the same way the invention of the assembly line improved manual-worker labor productivity.

With a just-in-time approach, Facilitated Thinking Technology delivers within a precise thought process the right questions to ask, the correct thinking tools to use, and the proper thinking methods to enhance personal or team thinking performance.

Facilitated Thinking Technology works because people rarely can bring to mind all the right mental tools and questions to ask at the moment of need.  Instead of relying on human memory, these apps take a different approach. Their goal is to provide cognitive tools, called thinklets, which function as if the human consultant, expert, or professor were working right with you and providing intellectual guidance to help you or team find your own best ideas.  Note: Thinklets can be viewed as “Tools for the mind” that activate thinking patterns that lead the mind down different pathways for developing new thoughts, ideas, and solutions. In its purest sense, a thinklet can be the one right question to ask.

The following is an analogy of an automobile assembly line process compared to a problem solving process. Both follow a sequence of tasks (mental tasks), both use tools (manual vs. cognitive “thinklets”) and both use raw materials (physical vs. data/information).

Assembly Line

Facilitated Thinking Environments

Tasks

A set of manual tasks are performed to create a physical product or result

A set of mental tasks are performed to achieve a cognitive product or result.

Tools

Physical tools are used to help perform the manual tasks. E.g. 125 pliers have been invented to do 125 different manual tasks.

Cogntive tools called thinklet help stimulate thinking to better perform mental tasks.

Raw Material

This is the basic material or resources from which something is manufactured or made into a physical product.

This is the information or data that is needed by the task for effective thinking to occur.

Note: Facilitated Thinking Environment Technology is Not AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Facilitated thinking technology is not a substitute for human thinking, and is actually just the opposite of Artificial Intelligence. The purpose of AI is to automate human thinking in ways that lead to deterministic answers. This works well for routine (scripted) thinking tasks. Facilitated thinking technology uses questions to enhance natural human intelligence by taking the mind out of scripted thinking patterns and leading to new associations, ideas and innovations.

Education Smartphone application development strategy:

American education needs to prepare students for a radically evolving workplace and jobs that don’t yet exist. This means educating students to become change-adept knowledge-workers who can “Think” their way through constant change. The following Education smartphone applications focus on improving the quality of student thinking. It does this by teaching students the right questions to ask and cognitive tools to use within optimal thinking frameworks (thinking processes). (see Education Handbook synopsis)     or      Get Handbook PDF

Education Smartphone apps:

1. Teacher Apps   More

  • Mentor Teacher apps: HS teachers use these apps on-demand to teach students the use of cognitive tools.
  • HS, College, University & MBA course apps: Turn teachers’ syllabuses and lesson plans into smartphone apps.

2. Student Apps   More

  • Self Learning apps: HS students use apps to teach themselves and access teachers as needed.
  • Project Learning apps: Apps function like having a project manager guiding students work efforts.
  • Character Education apps: Self-development apps function as if an advisor or counselor were personally guiding a student.

3. Curriculum & Assessment Apps  More

  • Thinking Body-of-knowledge app: Identify the thinking skills needed to become successful knowledge workers
  • Thinking as subject apps: Teach thinking mindset, skillsets and toolsets … as separate subjects.
  • Thinking skills assessment apps: Use Thinking Emulation grid as a rubric to assess student “thinking” abilities

1. Edumt Teacher apps (Back)

These apps are like having mentor teachers available on-demand. Here are some ways they can help:

  • Teachers can “PULL” thinklets and questions from a Thinking Emulation Grid in real-time to enhance any on-demand teachable moment.
  • Teachers can add cognitive tools and questions to their instruction without being disruptive to their current teaching practices.
  • Teachers can turn their course syllabi and lesson plans into custom Smartphone apps. Now, in addition to the knowledge that students take with them, student also take a smartphone application that functions almost like taking the teacher with them.

2. Edulearn Students Apps  (Back)

Student performance impacts from using  question/thinking-oriented smartphone apps

·         As student thinking effectiveness improves … student learning improves.

·         As student learning improves … student learning outcomes improve.

·         As student learning outcomes improve … student personal and work life performance improves.

Potential uses/benefits of apps:

  • Smartphone apps allow students to learn at their own pace.
  • For some students, using these apps can be less intimidating than participating in a classroom.
  • Smartphone apps offer completely safe, unbiased, and a non-judgmental environment for students self assessment.
  • Learning can occur within thinking processes … a key for better thinking.
  • Question oriented apps promote students ability to ask good questions.
  • Students who take control of their own learning empower themselves.
  • Student will view apps as a neutral facilitator that promotes character education in an unbiased way.
  • Students can continue to use apps on the job or in their personal lives.
  • Smartphone apps allow students to explore their own ideas and solutions more thoroughly before interacting with a teacher or counselor.
  • Unbiased apps can ask students’ questions that help them become more conscious of their own personal characteristics, beliefs, and behavior patterns.
  • Students can update apps with their own knowledge and share it with others.

3. Edurubric Curriculum apps  (Back)

Thinking Body of Knowledge apps

Current educational practices focus on teaching students critical thinking skills.  As important as critical thinking is … its primary purpose is to promote “learning.” While this is obviously important in the workplace, it is only a small portion of the thinking skills needed to be a successful knowledge workers. For example:

Critical Thinking in Education is                 primarily about “learning.”

Thinking in the Workplace is process oriented and about “taking the correct actions.”

The purpose of critical thinking in education is to help students acquire an understanding and knowledge of content.

The purpose of action-oriented thinking in the workplace is to help knowledge workers to set goals, make plans, develop  ideas, solve problems, make decisions, implement improvements, etc.

Critical thinking is “content-within-a-context.”

Action thinking is “thinking-within-a-process.”

Critical thinking is Answer driven.

Action thinking is Question driven.

The smartphone’s Thinking Emulation Grid can serve as a basis to answer questions like: A comprehensive “Thinking” Body of Knowledge needs to be developed for education.

  • What is the body of “thinking” knowledge that High School and College students need to become successful Knowledge workers?
  • What knowledge worker thinking skills do HS & College students need to acquire?
  • What is being taught today?
  • What is not taught that should be taught?
  • What should be taught?

Teach thinking as a subject apps

Smartphone apps can be used to teach thinking as a separate subject to help students acquire these common traits of exceptional thinkers:

1. Exceptional Thinkers ask the right questions.

2. Exceptional Thinkers use the correct thinking process.

Thinking skills assessment apps

The Thinking Emulation Grids provides a “thinking” Body of Knowledge that could become a rubric app to assess questing abilities.  For example:

An exemplary student would be able to answer this question: “What questions would you ask or what cognitive tools would you use to find out if the situation you are dealing with is either a: Problem or an Issue or an Opportunity?”

Thinking Tasks

Emerging – 1

Developing – 2

Proficient -3

Exemplary – 4

1. Define problem or situation.

Learner is not able, willing, or motivated to understand the Thinking questions needed for problem definition.

Learner poses extraneous or unimportant questions that provide only partial problem definition.

Learner states questions that correctly recognize the problem but language is ambiguous or imprecise.

Learner clearly expresses questions that would lead to complete definition of the problem.

The Purpose of Education: From a workforce development perspective.

While education has many purposes ranging from developing the whole child academically, intellectually, socially, and physically … this handbook focuses on; “How to better prepare High School and College students for a radically changing and globally competitive workplace?”

The Education Issue: A radically changing workplace.

Today, Education needs to prepare students for:

  • Jobs that don’t exist yet.
  • Using technologies that have not been invented yet.
  • In order to solve problems that we don’t even know are problems yet.

The Education Need: A workforce of change-adept thinkers.

In today’s modern workplace businesses need workers who are inquisitive THINKERS. In fact to remain globally competitive, America must have highly skilled knowledge workers. This means educating students to become change-adept workers who “Think” their way through constant workplace change. To do this American education needs to find ways to overcome these three major issues.

Issue #1: Current educational practices do not promote the type of thinking needed by today’s workforce. .

The type of thinking students learn in school is different than the type of thinking used by today’s knowledge workers.

Issue #2: Move teaching “thinking” to the forefront of education.

Current education practices and assessment are content and “answer-oriented” learning.  Education needs to focus more on thinking and question-oriented

Issue #3:  Learning & Forgetting, a major limitation of education

While education is more important than ever, a major weakness still remains: The average person does not remember much of what they have been taught.

The Education Solution:  Facilitated Thinking Smartphone application

Automated smartphone mentor teacher apps need to be developed that guide students thinking, in real-time. These apps function like having a mentor teacher personally present in the classroom.

Don’t just READ-IT … USE-IT … on-demand and in real-time.

  1. Publishing companies: Turn hardcopy, eBooks and eReader books (Kindle) into smartbooks (smartphone apps)
  2. Independent authors: same as above.
  3. Private training companies: Turn training material into smartphone apps
  4. Corporate training organizations: Turn corporate training material into apps
  5. Independent trainers: Use or embed MindSights apps into your training

Training & Publishing smartphone application development strategy:   See more

This strategy is about the difference between “push” vs. “pull” learning. The traditional “push” model of learning provides knowledge and information to learners with the hope something will stick in their memory. In a “pull” model of learning, the learner decides and pulls what they need to know at the moment of learning. Our development strategy is to turn training material and books into smartphone apps the can be “used” in real-time to improve performance on-the-job or in personal life.

Training & Publishing Smartphone Apps: More

  1. Smartbook apps: Readers don’t just “Read” books but query and interact with them
  2. Trainer-in-a phone apps: Instead of student remembering training, turn training into apps that student “used.”
  3. Support apps (Job Aids, Helpdesk):  Turn Methods and Procedure manuals into smartbook apps
  4. Custom Training apps: Embed smartphones apps into existing training

Training & Publishing Smartphone Apps: trainsmart

1. Smartbook Publication Apps

More than ever, people are interested in self-improvement books. These books can easily be turned into smartphone apps. In fact, any book of a reference nature is a candidate for becoming a “smartbook” application.  This kind of publication can also be designed for the reader to communicate with and get responses as if the reader were interacting with the human author.

2. Trainer-in-a-phone" apps:    Trainbox

What some of the data are about today’s training.

  • Employees need training … but don’t have time to take it.
  • Employees who take training acquire valuable knowledge … but forget much of it.
  • Helpful training materials are given to employees … but are not readily accessible for real-time use.
  • Measuring improved job performance from training is difficult … so an ROI on training can be difficult to justify.

A solution is to let us help you transform your Training courses, Training material, Webinars, and Self paced on line courses into smartphone apps that people “use” on-the-job.

3. Support Apps (Job Aids, Helpdesk): Trainjob

Process-embedded task work can also benefit from smartphone apps. Since we just can’t remember everything, Job Aids and Helpdesk apps can empower workers with cognitive tools to significantly improve on-the-job performance.

4. Custom Training Apps:   Traincustom

Some customization options are:

  • Add value to your current training courses by embedding smartphone apps that students take with them.
  • Turn you existing training into custom apps that include your clients tools and intellectual property.
  • Turn your training into a customized consulting services linked to your client’s workplace.
  • Develop new customized training to meet specific user/project requirements.

Trainsyn Training & Publishing Smartphone Strategy (Back)

What’s the trend in Training?

More than ever, success depends on a high quality training. Yet, most training today continues to mostly “push” knowledge and information at students with the hope something will stick in memory. But in an era of constant change, push learning has weakness like: Learning unimportant information that will never be used or Learning important information that may be forgotten by the time it needs to be used.

What’s needed is a pull model of learning where the student decides what they need to learn at the moment of learning. The model strives to continually expand the choices available while at the same time helping students find the right cognitive tools and learning resources that are most relevant to the situation they are entering.

What’s the trend in Publishing?

Dedicated eReaders like Kindle and Nook appear already close to extinction. They are being replaced by multipurpose iPad type devices. So what comes next?

The next major change in publishing will come when voice recognition is perfected. When this happens civilization will have crossed another important threshold in technology.  We believe with voice technology that future books will:

  • Readers will query the book and have the book find and return information.
  • Readers will interact with the book as if the book were human.

Note: This is not that far in the future.

The convergence of Training and Publishing with Smartphones

Workers today are required to adapt to ever changing systems and procedures with knowledge that is often fleeting because it changed since the last time it was used. What is now more important that acquiring knowledge and information via training or publications … is the application of knowledge to help workers carry out their job tasks with greater effectiveness? As Roger Schank, Director of the Institute of Learning Sciences at Northwestern University puts it, “What you know is trivial. The real issue is what do you know how to do?”

In this short statement, Schank accurately summarizes one of the greatest challenges faced by most organizations today—what do our workers really know how to do?

We believe that expert knowledge from training material and books can be turned into “smartbooks” (smartphone apps) the workers will be able to query on-demand to assist them in developing and maintaining their job-related competencies.

As change accelerates, so does the need for innovation and innovative thinking. And while efficiency and quality are necessary, they are becoming less of a differentiator. Companies and individuals who provide innovative products and services will be the winners. But innovation is very difficult… much more difficult that problem solving. An infrastructure of tools, processes, and practices needs to be put in place to facilitate innovation becoming a routine part of everyone’s job. Personal Innovation iipi

Turn yourself from an ordinary employee … into an innovator employee.

The idea that everyone in an organization can be an innovator is a radical departure from how things used to be. Now, whether you like it or not, innovation is coming to your organization, and you might as well get ahead of the curve instead of playing catch-up.

Or, as Procter and Gamble’s CEO A.G. Lafley and Ram Charan warn in their book, The Game Changer, “If Knowledge workers don't make a commitment to support and practice innovation, they will be left behind by a world becoming much more innovative.”

Personal Innovation software application

Today we know that front-line knowledge workers with their unique and invaluable perspectives can, with proper guidance, create brilliant innovations. The Personal Innovation software application guides you to find operational innovations that you can implement yourself in the following areas:

Operational excellence

Operational excellence is a never-ending effort for improvement in your job. It is based on the Kaizen principle that states everything can be improved. It uses a mindset that looks at your present job as being done in the “worst possible way.” Note: Toyota employees use this approach to generate over one million ideas every year!

·        Incremental productivity innovations: Continually improve efficiency.

·        Cost reduction innovation: Eliminate work that is no longer needed.

·        Product & service extensions: Add more quality with only minimal additional cost.

Customer service excellence

Get in tune with your customers through exceptional customer service. Value your customer comments and complaints as a source of innovation. The more difficult the problem, the better your chances for finding breakthrough innovations.

Ask your customer questions and listen carefully. Read between the lines, because customers may not always be able to explain everything. Determine what is missing and what it will take to satisfy your customer or client.

Personal performance excellence

Traditionally we have been told that the way to improve personal performance is to concentrate on improving our weaknesses.  The assumption is that the easy stuff will take care of itself. Sadly, by using your time to fix your weaknesses, it’s likely the best you will ever become is mediocre.

The fact is the easiest way to attain higher levels of achievement is to make better use of your natural talents, called signature strengths. When you use your “core” strengths, you will be doing what you do best. So look to re-invent your job with your signature strengths.

(top)

Team Innovation iiti

The synergy of discovery teams leads to powerful innovations.

Real innovation comes from one thing … hard work. It comes from curious people looking for problems and studying the world in search of ideas. Innovation is more and more about people working together.

Collaborative Team Innovation software application

This application facilitates teams to quickly experiment with existing technologies and create new innovations in the following areas, at minimal cost. It uses Open Innovation and Self-organizing Team approaches to do it.

  • Applied technology innovations: Use existing technologies in different ways to create more value.
  • Next generation products & services: Develop innovations that leapfrog your competition.

Open Innovation

For many companies, innovation remains an internal and proprietary activity, conducted largely from knowledge inside the organization. Many organizations are realizing that they can no longer afford to rely entirely on their own knowledge, but instead must find ways to benefit from sharing ideas and knowledge with outside entities.

Beyond being just another business fad, open innovation creates new sources of ideas and solutions with the potential of influencing every aspect of your business.

Self-organizing teams

The best and fastest way to benefit from open innovation is by developing self organizing teams. Team members collaborate directly with each other, rather than through traditional structures and hierarchies. They come together with a shared vision and goals, because they are intrinsically motivated to do so.

The following types of self-organizing teams produce more comprehensive innovations in less time and with lower costs.

  • Customer-led teams: Find your customers’ pain and needs. If the pain is cost containment … then lower your costs through a variety of options. Another option is to make your customers aware of a new need they have not yet noticed.

·         Business partner teams: We often underestimate the value of our various business partners, and in particular the value of our suppliers. When the market gets tight, your suppliers may struggle more than you. Typically when you help them succeed, you are helping yourself.

·         Applied technology teams: Technology alone is rarely the key to unlocking new innovations and economic value. Amazing innovations are derived by combining the capabilities of existing technologies into new ways of doing business.

Organization Innovation iioi

“Big Picture” innovation … more important than ever!

Today’s organizations are complex systems, but few professionals are trained or have the experience necessary to deal with a wide-angle view of the whole business. The Organization Innovation application overcomes ingrained business practices and guides the development of “Big Picture” innovations in the following ways:

1. Business process innovations: Re-design business processes to reduce costs and add customer value.

An organization is not just made up of a collection of people, but also of processes … the ways of conducting business. Sometimes these processes are well conceived, up to date, and carefully managed. But too often, many have evolved into bad processes. And bad processes can turn good workers into bad performers.

So instead of spending time fixing workers, who are not broken, you should spend time fixing organizational processes that are broken.

2.  Disruptive “discontinuous, radical” innovations: Are new technologies that supersede established business products and services.

A disruptive innovation is a new technology that has the potential to significantly transform the demands and needs of existing mainstream markets. The internet is an example.

3.  Sustainable futures innovations: Are innovations that balance nature’s resources with nature's ability to meet demand. See description several sections below.

Iihb Innovation Handbook synopsis (top)

Just as efficiency and quality have been systemized … it’s time to systemize innovation.

Not long ago, the typical organizational innovation process might have been considered “lucky.”  It was an individual creative genius shouting Eureka … and a corporate innovation hero jumping over internal hurdles to bring new products and services to market. Innovation leaders realize that there must be a shift from lucky innovation to a predictable innovation that is a matter of strategy and habit.

Full Spectrum Innovation does this by focusing on developing an infrastructure that includes:

  1. Innovation Mind-set (Culture):  Innovation starts with a change-adept mindset, which enables you and your organization to be proactive and find the opportunities that constant change creates. It is a mindset that not only tolerates change, but flourishes on it. As Steve Jobs, CEO Apple said; “Innovative thinking is the ability to see change as an opportunity - not a threat.”

  1. Innovation Skill-sets:  Once the mindset is established, the handbook describes the necessary skill-sets you and your organization need to support innovation. People have identified literally hundreds of different “thinking skills” including: inductive and deductive thinking; convergent and divergent thinking; logical, analytical and rational thinking, etc.  In the main, these skill sets are associated with solving problems and focus on studying the past and analyzing data that already exists. Innovative thinking, on the other hand, embraces “Change” by focusing on studying the future and analyzing data that may not even exist yet.

  1. Innovation Tool-sets:  And since rarely can we remember all the right mental tools to use when thinking, the handbook solves this problem by identifying Facilitated Thinking Tools that embedded in an innovation process.

  1. Innovation Processes:  Today, companies need to think differently about the practice of innovation. It's not just about conceiving the next breakthrough innovation but rather building an innovation portfolio that constitutes a full spectrum of all the following types of innovations.

·         Incremental Productivity Innovations

·         Cost Reduction Innovations

·         Products & Services Extensions Innovations

·         Applied Technology Innovations

·         Next Generation Products & Services Innovations

·         Disruptive (Discontinuous & Radical) Innovations

·         Business Model and Process Innovations

·         Sustainable Futures Innovations

Spiritual thinking smartphone application development strategy:

Our world is getting interconnected faster, and technology is helping to produce change more quickly than civilization’s ability to understand and guide its development. We are witnessing long standing practices crumble in the wake of world-wide change.

To better deal with change, we try harder and harder to make traditional routine problem solving and scientific ways of thinking work, with progressively poorer results. It can be a real shock when we start to realize how the lack of the right thinking skills is increasingly putting our world at risk. The challenge we face as individuals, organizations and society is to improve our “Conscious Spiritual Thinking” abilities.   See handbook synopsis       Click here for PDF download

A strong spiritual foundation then makes it possible for us to build strong relationships with our family, our community, the Earth, and the Divine. A strong spiritual foundation means becoming self-confident thinkers who live in the “present” and deal with the world “as it is.” Being in the present gives us a different level of awareness and frees us to take conscious actions rather than making emotional responses.

Cstct Community Building & Transformation App   (Back)

Community building and transformation projects are at best challenging and historically have had dubious success. The reason is good hearted people have been using the traditional problem solving approach to community building. The focus was to go into “needy and deficient” neighborhoods and fix (solve) problems.

As well intentioned as this approach was and still remains … it actually created a bigger problem. It made most neighborhoods dependent on outside help. Many people came to believe they were incapable of taking charge of their lives. And even believe they lacked the ability to acquire skills and talents to be successful on their own.

A conscious spiritual thinking approach to community building starts within the community and gets people:

  • To become “aware” of their own gifts and talents.
  • To blend skills and work together in “oneness” within the community to accomplish things no individual alone could accomplish.
  • To take a “wholeness” approach on how community institutions contribute to the well being of the larger and global community.

This connectedness approach leads to better utilizing local and neighborhood resources in ways that multiply their power and effectiveness. Everyone within the community takes ownership and pride in rebuilding their own neighborhood.

Living and thinking                    in the present moment.

Dennis J. Heindl

In simple terms, life can be described as a sequence of problems that each individual must solve for themselves. And a problem, for most people, is virtually anything that “changes” in life that requires the individual to change … when they don’t want to change.

In the past when change (problems) occurred slowly, society and individuals had time to easily adapt. However, we have now entered an era of hyper change (or hyper problems) and are finding it more difficult to adapt. Relying on our traditional problem solving and scientific thinking processes are no longer sufficient to deal with our modern world. So … it’s time for Conscious Spiritual Thinking.

What is Conscious Spiritual Thinking?

Conscious Spiritual Thinking is the ability to think for one's self and reliably make responsible decisions about one's life, behavior, and actions with full knowledge of the consequences of those decisions on others and the world at large.

Conscious Spiritual Thinking addresses our innate sense of connectedness that urges building relationships and growing through collaborative behavior. Its purpose is to guide actions and behavior through a conscious connectedness to ourselves, others and the Divine God.

It focuses on developing the following three spiritual thinking abilities. These abilities provide an “Us” way of thinking that leads to win/win, and/both, and us/together actions. It contrasts to “I” thinking that typically leads to win/lose, either/or, and us-versus-them actions.

Three Conscious Spiritual Thinking Abilities

·         Awareness: Connecting to our inner wisdom.

·         Oneness: Connecting to the wisdom of others.

·         Wholeness: Connecting to the wisdom of the Devine God.

What is Facilitated Thinking Technology.

The evolution of “tools” has been one way of marking humankind’s progress. Facilitated Thinking Technology is simply a natural evolution from 20th century manual tools to 21st century cognitive tools. In the 20th century, for example, the invention of the assembly line and factory automation tools increased Manual worker “labor” productivity … fifty fold. Note: More than 125 types of pliers were invented over the past 100 years to do different manual tasks.

The development of Facilitated Thinking Technology can be characterized as an assembly line for the mind that uses cognitive tools, called thinklets, which improve individual and team “thinking” productivity. Facilitation Thinking Technology is built on the same principle that underlies the selection of any manual tool: choose one appropriate for the “thinking” task at hand.

The technology functions like a skilled consultant, educator or trusted friend who delivers timely advice by asking just the right questions, recommending the right cognitive tools to use, and offering successful methods and insights. This results in amplifying natural human thinking to arrive at higher levels of thought.

For a description on how it works download this white paper: Facilitated Thinking Technology: A fifty-fold increase in thinking productivity.

Why it’s needed now.

We all think, so why do we need to think better? The answer is: as change accelerates … so does the need for higher order thinking. Our capacity to adapt to constant change becomes preeminent. Here is the logic flow that shows today’s need for Facilitated Thinking Technology.

1.

The “Happy Days” era over. We may yearn for the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s when change was relatively slow and fairly easy to mange … but they are gone.

2.

The “Hyper Change” era has begun. It began around the year 2000 with the convergence of information and communication technologies. Now anyone on earth with a computer and some smarts has the opportunity to create ideas that can change our world.

3.

In fact, our world is rapidly becoming more interconnected … is generating increasing amounts of information … and is growing much more complex. The result is “Change” may be accelerating faster than civilization’s ability to understand and guide its development.

Note: Dr. Edward deBono in his 2010 book, Think! Before It’s Too Late may have said it best: The biggest problem facing the world today is not pollution, war, poverty or climate change, but inadequate thinking”.

4.

Dr. deBono’s clear observation for managing change is … educate change-adept people who can “Think” their way through constant change, on the job and in their personal lives. But that might not be so easy to do.

5.

For example: The March 7th 2011 Newsweek cover story Brain Freeze – I Can’t Think offers some compelling evidence that too much information and complexity is starting to overwhelm and impact thinking. In some instances studies have shown brains and thinking shutting down because of too much information.

6.

In addition, thinking has generally been considered a natural by-product of learning.  There are relatively few courses that formally teach people how to think. In fact, doing a Google search found that you could get a Degree in Thanatology … but not a Degree in Thinking.

7.

The time has come … to move teaching thinking to the forefront of education. But for that to happen there are several challenges that need to be overcome.

8.

The first challenge is education practices must evolve. Current education is Answer-oriented and focuses on learning content. Teaching thinking, however, is Question-oriented and focuses on process. Answers-oriented learning actually inhibits and usually stops student thinking. Question-oriented learning starts and engages student thinking

This viewpoint is supported by these Einstein quotes: “What's different about me? It's my ability to ask the right questions clearly & cleanly.”, and,The key to thinking is never to stop asking questions.

9.

The second challenge is the “learning & forgetting” limitation of human memory. No matter how well we are taught, most of us will forget most of it. So even when we are taught wonderful thinking skills, tools and processes … we are not going to remember most of the right tools or questions to ask when the time comes to put them to use.

10.

The third challenge is scripted thinking.  While we all possess the ability to think in different ways, each of us has developed dominant (scripted) thinking patterns. When confronted with a thinking task, the mind instinctively draws upon the skills that are most familiar to guide us.  While scripted thinking works well for routine tasks, it doesn’t work well for changing tasks.

So … what is the solution for overcoming these challenges?

11.

The solution is the natural progression of cognitive tools like Facilitated Thinking Technology. For ten years the technology has been evolving to function like an assembly line for the mind. It is designed to deliver the right questions to ask and tools to use … in the classroom or on-the-job. These cognitive tools, called thinklets, enable the mind to go down thinking pathways that leads to the best ideas, solutions and decisions.

12.

But until now… there has been a major problem with this technology.  “Thinking” is a real-time activity and there has not been a good technology to deliver cognitive tools in real-time.  The advent of smartphone technology is major game changer. Smartphone apps function in real-time and can deliver intellectual guidance in the moment of need.

13.

And even better yet … when voice recognition gets perfected, civilization will have crossed yet another important threshold in technology.  Smartphone apps can then be “queried” or they can “listen” to a conversation and respond back as if a human were participating in the conversation.

14.

The time has arrived for Facilitated Thinking Technology smartphone apps!

    1. Meeting “Listen” mode: Smartphone application “listens” to a meeting, or any, conversation and delivers intellectual guidance … as if a skilled human consultant were personally participating in the meeting or conversation.
    2. Personal “Query” mode: Knowledge workers “query” the smartphone app in real-time to find the right cognitive tools to facilitate better on-the-job performance.
    3. Menu mode: Knowledge workers select from a variety of thinking process menus to guide self development or learning in-the-moment of need.
    4. Instant Polling: Quickly get a reading from meeting participants about a topic, decision, or focus of the meeting
    5. Get Business Intelligence: Access SharePoint, Google Doc and others sources of information on-demand to help during meetings.
    6. Thinking Emulation Grid: Like a Google for the mind, one click provides the cognitive tool to enhance thinking effectiveness.
    7. Customize Application: Enhance the App by adding your organization cognitive tools and key questions to ask.
